Kashi Visveshwara temple is located at Lakkundi  village in Gadag district , Karnataka India. The temple is built in 11th century A.D and built by the Western Chalukya Empire. The temple is dedicated to Hindu God Lord Shiva.kashi vishwanath temple, Lakkundi is a perfect destination for a great time with your dear ones. Enjoy the attractions of this popular tourist spot. With so much to lure your senses and offer you recreation at its best, get drenched in the spirit of adventure that you get to explore at kashi vishwanath temple, Lakkundi. Enjoy together all the points of popular interests and bring back several memorable moments. This temple has a unique feature: a small surya shrine faces the main shrine on the west. There is a common platform between both which must have been an open mandapa originally. Hence the Kashivishvanatha temple has an entrance on the east side and south side of the mandapa. The entrance doorway and the towers are covered with close intricate carving. The shikhara is in the North-Indian style and it looks like a lathe must have been used to make the complex circular pillars.Kashi Visveshwara is still undertaken from Archaeological survey of India (ASI). The place is well maintained by the government and is a protected monument. The complex consists of Kashivishwanatha Temple and Suryanarayana temple opposite to each other and also Nanneshwara Temple on the other side of the road.

Architecture of  Kashi Visveshwara Temple Lakkundi

The center of cultural and temple-building activity of the Western Chalukya Empire lay in the Tungabhadra
river region, where large medieval workshops built numerous monuments. These monuments, regional variants of preexisting Dravida(South Indian) temples, defined the Karnata dravida tradition Lakkundi in particular was the location of the mature phase of the Western Chalukya architecture and the Kasivisvesvara temple marks a high point of these achievements. The temple 'shikhara' has been constructed in the northern Indian style of architecture and it resembles a lathe that might have been employed to erect the circular pillars. According the Henry Cousens, it is one of the most ornate temples in the Kannada spoken region of India. The temple is very beautiful as it was constructed in the typical Hoysala style. It is the same style that the temples at Belur and Halibedu were constructed.

History of  Kashi Visveshwara Temple Lakkundi

The existence of a 1087 CE inscription on a beam in the Kashi Visveshwara temple Mantapa (hall) and the plainness of that part of the temple suggests that the original construction may have been simpler and that the profusion of decoration may have been added to the other parts of the temple at a later period, with the end of Chola invasions of Chalukyan territory. Most of the inscriptions in Lakkundi date from 1170 CE onwards. It is known that Hoysala king Veera Ballala II annexed Lakkundi (also known as Lokkigundi) from the Seunas of Devagiri and made it his capital around 1193 CE. It is possible that the temple may have received embellishment during his rule.

More Iformation about Veeranarayana Temple Gadag

Veeranarayana Temple is located in Gadag city Karnataka 60 Km from Hubli. The temple was built in 1117 AD and built by  Hoysala empire King Vishnuvardhana. The temple is dedicated to Veeranarayana (Lord Vishnu). The Veeranarayana temple is a protected monument under the Karnataka state division of the Archaeological Survey of India(ASI).The legend says that Naranappa got the inspiration to narrate the epic only during the time he sat before the Lord in a holy posture in a wet cloth dried up. This temple attracts thousands of devotees throughout the year.A trinity of Lord Vishnu’s forms is completed by Lord Krishna standing under the Kalpavriksha Tree (wish fulfilling tree in Hindu mythology), playing a flute, his slender waist giving size zero women a run for their money.  Saints, gopikas, cowherds and cattle carved alongside have been listening to his music since the 13th century. According to the priest, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has granted this idol of Venugopala status of the most beautiful Krishna idol, though the claim is not verified by an online search. In the heart of the town is the Viranarayana temple. The famous Kannada poet Naranappa, popularly called as Kumara Vyasa is said to have composed the great epic Mahabharata in poetic form sitting in the main hall of this temple, inspired by the deity. The temple is located within a huge complex. Photography is not allowed inside hence I was not able to get much in my lenses, however there is nothing much on interest as well. The old structures are overshadowed by modern constructions.

History of  Veeranarayana Temple Gadag

The Hoysala King Bittideva was influenced by the great Vaishnava Saint Sri Ramanujacharya and converted to Vaishnavism from Jainism. He changed his name to Vishnuvardhana. He built several temples and this Veeranarayana temple is believed to be one among them. It is one of the Pancha Narayana Kshetras. The Kannada Poet Kumara Vyasa is believed to have composed his version of the Mahabharata in this temple.

Architecture of  Veeranarayana Temple Gadag

The Veeranarayana Temple is an amalgam of various schools of architecture-Chalukya, Hoysala and Vijayanagara. At the entrance, two stone elephants with broken tusks, their legs bent with the strain, seem to be pulling the structure. A pillared hall then opens into a courtyard housing the beautifully sculpted temple on a star shaped platform typical of the Hoysala style of architecture, its shape accentuated by a colourful hedge at its periphery.
A dhwajastambha (flag staff) in front of the rather squat main structure, has a ‘naamam’ at the base, indicating the main deity of the temple is Lord Vishnu. Lathe-turned, glossy black ornamented pillars line the main ‘mandap’ or hall leading to the trikuta (three towers) layout – the main idol of Lord Veeranarayana in the centre facing East, Lord Venugopala facing North and Lord Yoganarasimha facing south. The temple is decorated with carved columns.

Later, the town came to be known as Lakshmeshwar. The Someshwara temple is an important sacred structure here.  Built in the 11th century AD, it represents the ornate Chalukyan style of architecture with friezes of elephants and richly carved elaborate motifs.  There are 16 bell-shaped decorated pillars.
