Nagchandreshwar Temple is located on the third floor of the world famous Mahakaleshwar Mandir in Ujjain.The temple is built about 11th century and built by Parmar King Bhoj.After this temple is renovated in 1732 by Maharaj Ranoji Sindhiya.The temple is dedicated to Lord Nagdevta(Snake Lord) and Lord Shiva.The temple is unique in the sense as" it is open only on the Shravan Shukla Paksha Panchami "(the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha of Shravan month).This is the famous Nagpanchami day.

In the temple, Shiva and Goddess Parvati can be seated on Sheshnag or Ananta Sesha. It is the believed that this idol was brought here from Nepal in 7th century AD. This is a very rare idol of Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Every year on Nagpanchami Day 12:00AM After Puja performed by the collector and the Mahanirvani Akhara's Mahant Prakashpuri at midnight, gets are opened for common devotees.About 2 Lakhs devotees arrive on the day at Mahakaleshwar Temple to have darshan of Shiva as Nagchandreshwar.

Here Shiva is given importance as one who has the power over nagas or snakes. He is also one who gave refuge to Chandra – the moon god.The temple is vividly described in the Puranas.The first two stories of the Mahakal Temple houses the Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar forms of Shiva.
