One of the more locally famous temples in the region, the Parashar temple is dedicated to Rishi Parashar. Till a few days ago, I was not even aware that Hindu temples are also dedicated to Rishis. Now that I am, I read up a little to find out the reason behind this and figured this practice is much more common to hilly areas because a lot of these sages spent time wandering the mountains. Mountains, even in those days of small populations were quieter, quainter, cleaner and therefore the best places for meditation. In fact, legend also has it that Pandavas spent a large part of their exile in the mountains of Himachal.
The exact history of the Parashar Temple is unknown, but according to
folklores, it took around 18 years to complete its construction. Many
also believe that the architecture belongs to that of the 14th century
and was commissioned by Ban Sen, the king of Mandi.
This wooden temple has a pagoda style of architecture with intricate
carvings of animals and serpents. As legend states, it is made of deodar
wood. The region has emerged as a popular tourist destination besides
being a pilgrimage site. Pilgrims from India and across the world throng
this place particularly during the annual festival held in the month of
June.
