About  Sanchi Stupa

Sanchi is famous for outstanding specimen of Buddhist art and architecture, belonging to the period between the third century BC and the twelfth century AD. The most important of all the Sanchi monuments is the Sanchi Stupa. Sanchi is now listed under the world heritage sites by UNESCO.The second largest stupa in India after that of Amravati, the Sanchi stupa is surrounded by a railing with four carved gateways facing towards all four directions. The entire stupa comprises symbolic representation of the gifts of nature as if explaining the Buddhist doctrine by reflecting the people's love for the nature. The use of lotus in stupa symbolises the rise of people from the mud of materialism to the reality and spirituality of life. Similarly, the female tree spirits depicted in the gateways are symbols of fertility. This dome shaped stupa is sprawled on an area of 120 feet and rise up to a height of 54 feet (excluding the umbrella and railings). Not much of a monument, this stupa is a mimic of the funerary mound, that was build for the kings in early times. This fact is verified by the presence of the umbrella at the top of the stupa which was also a royal symbol. The four gateways are the finest work of Sanchi art and have the episodes of Buddha's life carved on them.
Sanchi is one of those places that were custom-made for black and white history textbooks. Revolving around the chapters of Buddhism, this evocative and site has been a microcosm of Buddhist art for nearly 1,300 years. Within the Sanchi Stupa complex, there are around 50 structures in totality and that includes pillars, toranas (typical gateway of Buddhist architecture), temples and monasteries. In these magnanimous structures from ancient India, the glory is still restored in the complex structures of the monument.
Architectur of  Sanchi Stupa

The Sanchi Stupa is a huge semi-circular, dome shaped chamber in which the relics of Lord Buddha are kept in serene calmness. It is a brick construction that dates back to the third century A.D. This chamber is about 16.5 meters tall and 36 meters in diameter.
Sanchi Stupa is said to be one of the most organized structures with the best architectural designs that hail from the medieval period. The framework and designs depict the love and the nature of the historical period during the development of the stupa. The gateway has as eye-catching architecture, with male and female tree murals carved on it. It is believed that these two spirits portray the human feelings and mental state. Buddhists believe that they are welcoming figurines and hence a "good omen" to have at the front.
Sanchi Stupa carries a rich heritage of architectural dignity. It is the most stunning Stupa that has been exuding a divine charm over the centuries. It is a sacred place enriched with harmony and peace.

History of  Sanchi Stupa

Sanchi Stupa is the place where the great emperor of India had once walked and this weird yet amazing feeling, of walking on the path of history is incomparable.Sanchi Stupas at Sanchi were built during the period of 3rd century that stretched till 12th century. The major stupa of the town is the great Sanchi Stupa, that was built because of the newly aroused zealot inside King Asoka, who had then embraced Buddhism. These stupas are not dedicated to Lord Buddha, but to Buddhism. Asoka is known to have built various stupas in various parts of the country, but the Sanchi stupa here, surpasses them all. A very common pattern of the stupas will give the basis details of these stupas, that is they mainly consist of elaborate gateways, intricately carved pillars and the large hemispherical domes, that enshrines Buddhist relics.
