The history of the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple dates back to the mythological occurrence of the episode of Samudra Manthan. The incident observed the churning of the ocean by both Asuras and Devas in the pursuit of Amrit (elixir). However, during Samudramanthan, Amrit did come out but was accompanied by poison. The event of the churning of the ocean by both demons and gods in the desire of Amrit came to be known as Samudramanthan.

The poison that emerged from the churning of the ocean was called ‘Halahal’ and its believed to have had the level of toxicity close to destroying the whole of the creation.

Shivalinga of Neelkanth mahadev temple rishikesh

Since nobody could consume the poison, Lord Shiva stepped in for it. Although he did not consume the poison but he installed it in his throat. Soon after his throat turned blue and hence, he became popular as ‘Neelkanth’, literally translating to ‘The Blue Throated One’. However, after some time the poison began to cause inflammation in his throat.

That’s when he found the famous Peepal Tree and meditated under it for about 60,000 years and established a holy clod called Pind there. Hence, that’s how the sacred place where Lord Shiva meditated to get away with the pain from the poison in his throat, became the temple which is a main attraction among the devotees worldwide.

More Information About Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple

Daksha Mahadev Temple, situated in Kankhal, is located at a distance of 4 km from the township of Haridwar. One of the ancient temples of Lord Shiva, this temple is visited by large number of devotees every year. According to the mythologies, this temple is associated to Daksha Yagya. Popularly known as Shri Daksheshwar Temple, this temple was initially constructed in 1810 AD by Queen Dhankaur. However, the temple was again constructed in 1962.
Like most of the other shrines, the Daksha Temple has also associations with a legend. Hindus believe that it is here where King Daksha Prajapati (Sati's father) has observed his yagna (a ritual meant to invoke gods and seek their favour). Legend has it that while the king performed the ritual he did not invite Lord Shiva. On learning this Sati (Lord Shiva's consort) felt deeply insulted and as a result she set herself on fire in the yagna kund. An infuriated Shiva killed king Daksha. However, Shiva later brought Sati's father back to life. The Daksha Temple stands to commemorate the whole incident.

The event being a highly significant one, the Daksha Temple held in high reverence by the Hindus. Pilgrims and devotees from all around come to Kankhal to pay a visit to the temple and seek blessings from the deity. The Birbhadreshwar Temple in Kankhal is another prominent religious site that devotees visit during their tour from Haridwar to Kankhal.
