More Information about Shri Giriraj ji Maharaj Temple Govardhan

Shri Giriraj ji Maharaj Temple is located at Giriraj Mountain Govardhan Hill of 21 Km far Lord Krishna's Birth City Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to LOrd Krishna known as Giriraj ji.Popular as a  famous place for Hindu pilgrimage, Govardhan Parvat is a narrow sandstone hill, which is 8 km in length. It is said that Lord Krishna held Govardhan Hill on his little finger to save the town from wrath of the god of rains Indra.

The story goes like this,  All the gwals (people who take care of Cows) and farmers used to worship God Indra (Hindu God of Rain), for the proper rainfall of the season. This was a age long practice going on in Brij area. One day Krishna as a child challenged this practice and argued that it is Indra's duty to give rain whether or not you offer him prayers. Krishna said instead we should worship Goverdhan, who is providing us the water and fodder for the survival of cattle. Gwals agreed on this and offered worship to Goverdhan instead of Indra.

On this Indra got angry and ordered his furious clouds to burst on Brij and destroy it with rain and flood. As the rain got heavy all Gwals planned to leave the Brij Area; Krishna said that why should we leave when Goverdhan is here. Krishna through his leela lifted the Goverdhan hill only on his index finger. All the living organisms of Brij area were sheltered under it.  This rain continued for 7 days till all the clouds of Indra were emptied; Indra's pride was destroyed and he agreed that till Shri Goverdhan is there no one can do bad in Brij area. From that day onwards Goverdhan hill is worshiped and prayed as Lord Krishna himself . From this leela onwards Krishna got name 'Goverdhan-dhari' (one who beholds Goverdhan) and 'Indradaman' (one who broke the pride of Indra).

About  Madan Mohan Temple

Madan Mohan Temple is Located  near the Kali Ghat,Vrindavan,Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. This is the oldest temple in Vrindavan.Madana-Mohan Temple Madana-Mohan means “one who can even enchant Cupid.” In the temple, there are three altars. Madana-Mohan stands on the center altar, with Sri Radha on his left and Lalita Devi on his right. The temple is closely associated with the saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu . The original image of Lord Madan Gopal was shifted from the shrine to Karauli in Rajasthan for safe keeping during Mugal emperor Aurangzeb's rule. Today, a replica of the image is worshiped at the temple.

History of  Madan Mohan Temple

History of the Madan Mohan Temple Vrindavan: There is a very long and interesting story associated with the Madan Mohan Temple. There was a merchant by the name of Ram Das Kapoor. It so happened that a ship he owned went aground. This was as it is very unfortunate and on top of that the ship happened to be loaded with a whole lot of goods. He would have to face severe financial losses because of this. After receiving Sanatana Goswami's advice, he prayed to Madan Mohan for help. The Lord answered his sincere prayers and his ship was rescued. He reaped a huge profit from the deal and decided to contribute the money to build a temple in honor of Madan Mohan.

As for Sanatana Goswami, he was the person who had been entrusted with the responsibility of worshipping the deity of Madan Mohan by Purusottama Chaube even before he had advised Ram Das Kapoor to build a temple. Actually the original deity of Madan Mohan was founded by Advaita Acharya at the base of an old vat tree when he was on a tour to Vrindavan. He had given it to his disciple Purusottama Chaube who in turn had handed it over to Sanatana Goswami. After the temple was set up by Ram Das Kapur at the behest of Sanatana Goswami, the idol of Madana Mohana came to be worshipped there. The Madan Mohan Temple was positioned on top of a 50 feet hill known as Aditya Tila. It opened its doors for the devotees' way back in 1580. Till today it is visited by a large number of devotees even though unfortunately the deity that is now worshipped here is not the original one. It is just a replica of the original which was transferred from Vrindavan to a place called Karoli located to the south east of Jaipur in Rajasthan. This was done in the year 1670 to protect it from the invasions of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. At the foothills, there is yet another Madan Mohan Temple that is far newer and is believed to have been built by Sri Nand Kumar Bose of Bengal. Here too Madan Mohan deities are worshipped.

More Information about Dwarkadhish Temple Mathura

The Dwarkadhish Temple in Mathura was built in 1814 by Seth Gokul Das Parikh, who was a treasurer of the Gwalior Estate. The temple is close to the Vishram Ghat, one of the most prominent ghats on the banks of the city. Lord Krishna was often referred to as “Dwarkadhish” or “King of Dwarka” and so the name of the temple. Nowadays, the temple is administered by the Vallabhacharya sect.

The main shrine houses the idols of Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha. Then temple also enshrines idols of other gods and goddesses. The interiors flaunt magnificent works of art, carvings and paintings.

The temple welcomes thousands of visitors daily and many more during festive occasions, especially during Janmasthmi, or the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, which falls in August/September. It is also locally known for its annual swing festival which takes place at the end of every Shravan month, which marks the beginning of the rainy season.

History of Dwarkadish Temple Mathura

The origin of Mathura is ancient. It is said to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the popular incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Mathura and the area around it, including Vrindavan, are linked with the childhood exploits of Lord Krishna. It is mentioned in the ancient Indian epic of Mahabharata. It later became a part of the Mauryan Empire. King Ashok, the great Mauryan ruler, built a number of Buddhist monuments in and around Mathura in the third century. Between first century BC and first century AD, Mathura was the center for arts. The sculpture making and stone carving styles of this period are referred to as belonging to the Mathura School of Art. The main theme of these sculptures was inspired by the life of Lord Buddha. The decline of Buddhism in this region following the decline of the Mauryan Empire saw the rise of Hindu influence. However, in the 11th century AD, Mahmud Ghazni destroyed a large number of Buddhist and Hindu shrines. In the 15th century, Sikandar Lodhi, one of the Sultans from Delhi, continued the pillage of this city. The last great Mughal ruler and a fanatic Muslim, Aurangzeb flattened the Kesava Deo temple and a built a mosque here. The Afghani marauder Ahmed Shah Abdali dealt the final blow in 1757, when he torched the city. It came under British rule in 1804.

Architecture of Dwarkadhish Temple Mathura

A Temple was built at the site around 400 BC by Vajranabhji, the great grandson of Lord Krishna, however the present structure was built during the 16th century in a typical Chalukyan style of architecture. The beautiful temple rises up to a height of 51.8 mts. Also known as the Jagat Mandir, the temple has two Sikhara. The Nij shikhar ( The longer sikhar ) is where the deity of Lord Dwarkadhish is placed. The huge temple consists of 60 exquisitely carved pillars and a number of sculptures that depict the influence of various dynasties such as the Guptas, Pallavas and Chavdas ( referring to Chavda Kingdom ) that ruled Dwarka over the years. The entrance to the temple is from the north, also known as the Moksha Dwaar while towards the south is the Swarg Dwaar, from where a series of steps leads down to the banks of river Gomti. According to legend, the temple was constructed in a single day by Vishwakarma, the lord of construction. The deity of Lord Dwarkadhish is made of shiny black stone and is about 2.25 ft in height. The four hands of the Lord carries a conch, wheel, a mace and a lotus each and is popularly known as 'Shankh Chakra Gada Padma Chaturbhuj'. It is said that the deity was hidden for years to protect it from invaders while another deity brought from the Rukmini temple was installed in its absence. The original deity was reinstalled during the 16th century after the construction of the new temple.
