Architecture of  Gurudwara Nanak Piao Sahib in New Delhi

Gurudwara Nanak Piao has an impressive Mughal-style gate. The Gurdwara is on a 5 feet high platform and has wide ‘Pari-Karama’. The interiors of the main hall are very well done and part of the ceiling is in "Sheesh Mahal" style. Behind the Gurdwara is a ‘Sarovar’ with beautiful arched veranda on the periphery.
The historic well is still functional and ‘Amrit’ is served by the volunteers. The well is covered with a white dome with pillars decorated in rather bright fashion.

There is still lot of area lying vacant. Proper planning of that could greatly enhance the beauty and ambience of the Gurdwara.

More Information about Gurudwara Majnu Ka Tila Sahib Delhi

Gurudwara Majnu Ka Tila Sahib is located Opposite Timarpur Colony, Delhi. The Opposite Gurudwara is dedicated to Sikh Guru Nanak Ji.The Gurudwara Majnu Ka Tila was visited by the founder of Sikhism and the first Sikh Guru named Guru Nanak who was renowned for his secular teachings and divine qualities. Guru Nanak sanctified this place during the 15th Century AD when he was travelling across India preaching the good news and love of God. This Gurudwara stands on a white marble & a majestic top and since it is situated on the banks of the river, the view of River Yamuna is outstandingly beautiful and serene – a good shot for all photographers, especially during sunrise & sunset. Carrying people across the river in his boat for free, prayer and meditation were the sole aims in his life. He craved for a Darshan of God so much that the local people started calling him "Majnu", after the Persian lover. One fine day, he had the chance of meeting Guru Nanak, who blessed him and helped him achieve enlightenment. Thereafter, he became a staunch devotee of Guru Nanak. It was his hermitage on the banks of the river Yamuna that later came to be known as Majnu-Ka-Tila. The site of Majnu Ka Teela Gurudwara, in New Delhi, has seen many spiritual discourses between yogis, sufis, fakirs and Guru Nanak. Guru Har Gobind, the Sixth Guru also stayed at the Majnu Ka Tila, when Emperor Jehangir invited him. Slowly and gradually, this place acquired significance and a gurdwara was constructed here. The Gurdwara also houses a well inside its compound. Every year, the birth anniversary of Khalsa is celebrated at the Gurdwara on Baisakhi with much fanfare and a "langar" is arranged for all.
The Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila is a small complex made of white marble and homes a small sacred pond. It also welcomes devotees from across the country to celebrate the Birth Anniversary of 'Khalsa' which refers to the assembly of all the Sikhs who have been baptized in the Holy Communion Ceremony or 'Amrit Sanchar Ceremony'. The name 'Khalsa' was derived from Arabic word 'Khalis' which means 'Pure' and was a Saint Soldiers' Military Order established by the tenth Sikh Guru named Guru Gobind Singh on 30th March 1699. The Sikh Festival of Baisakhi is celebrated every year with great pomp and enthusiasm wherein the Gurudwara is lit up with bright lights and special prayer service is conducted followed by one of its kind event of providing people with free food called 'Langar' which invites both rich and poor people irrespective of their religion, caste or creed who sit together within the Langar Hall of this Gurudwara and join in this celebration.

In later history Sikh military leader Baghel Singh built the Majnu ka Tila Gurudwara to commemorate the stay in 1783, and the sixth Sikh guru, Guru Har Gobind also stayed here. Today it is one of oldest extant Sikh shrines in Delhi and the surrounding estate of donated by early 19th-century Sikh emperor, Ranjit Singh. History of  Gurudwara Rikab Ganj Sahib

Historical records show that Sardar Baghel Singh, constructed a Gurdwara in village Raisina in 1783 to perpetuate the memory of the ninth Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur. He had conquered Delhi by leading an army of 30,000 Sikh warriors along with four other commanders. Before 1783, the Muslims of Delhi had built a mosque on this very spot. The Sikhs claimed this spot as their own sacred place in memory of the sacrifice to their Guru. Muslims contested the claim, and there was strong objection to the dismantling of the Mosque.
Rival parties stood with swords drawn and the atmosphere was tense - anything could have happened. However, the Sikhs offered to reconstruct the mosque for the Muslims with their own expense in case the urn containing the ashes of the respected Guru was not found buried beneath the Mosque that stood there. This helped calm the atmosphere and tempers cooled down. The excavation work commenced in the presence of the Mughal officials.
The assertion made by the Sikhs proved to be correct and they were allowed to construct Gurdwara Rakab Ganj by Emperor Shah Alam II. He also granted two Sanads to Sikhs. One Sanad granted permission to S. Bhagel Singh to take possession of the land for construction of a Gurdwara and a garden. By the second Sanad, the Emperor also gifted 101 bighas and 5 biswas pukhta equal to about 63 acres with 3 wells land, revenue free. Sikh forces agreed to withdraw from Delhi territory peacefully after the construction of their religious shrines in the Mughal capital in lieu of these concessions.

More Information about Gurudwara Moti Bagh Sahib New Delhi

Gurudwara Moti Bagh Sahib is very oldest and historical Sikh Gurudwara New Delhi.Gurudwara Moti Bagh Sahib is located Ring Road, Moti Bagh,New Delhi. Gurudwara Shri Moti Bagh Sahib is an ancient Gurudwara, related with the ninth Sikh Guru - Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib. Earlier, the name given to this Gurudwara was Mochi Bagh and afterwards the named was changed to Gurudwara Moti Bagh Sahib. This gurdwara is associated with the Tenth Guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Guruji came to Delhi on the request of Prince Muazzam, who had requested for help in the battle for the throne of Delhi. Guru Sahib camped at the site of this Gurdwara. On his arrival, Guru Sahib shot an arrow into the Red Fort, informing the Prince of his arrival. The Prince, astonished at this display of archery, exclaimed that this could only be a miracle. A second arrow arrived immediately carrying a note saying that it was not a miracle but sheer archery. The Guru's meeting with the Prince took place at the site of Gurdwara Damdama Sahib.

History of  Gurudwara Moti Bagh Sahib New Delhi

The tenth Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji is associated with Gurudwara Moti Bagh Sahib. Prince Mu’azzam had requested Guru Gobind to come to the Delhi and help him in the battle for the throne of Delhi. The battle started in the year 1707 after the sudden demise of Emperor Aurangzeb shook the people. An ardent devotee of Guru Sahib, Bhai Nand Lal, a poet and a great scholar, requested Guru Gobind Ji to help the prince, the eldest son of Aurangzeb.

Guru Gobind Ji had a positive impression about the prince after he refused to attack at Anandpur Sahib. Mughal Emperor had deputed the king in Punjab to stop the activities of Guru Sahib. The chiefs of Shivalik gave very dangerous reports against the Guru to the Prince. But after finding out that all the reports were false, he wrote back to the chief saying that the Guru was a holy man and the Hill Rajas were the main reasons of all the troubles caused. The prince was also jailed as he opposed his father’s decision.
What the prince wrote was not perceived well by Aurangzeb and henceforth he sent the best four generals form his team to find the whole truth behind the happening. To his surprise, the generals of Aurangzeb said that the Guru always led a saint life and never plotted or planned anything against anyone. The messengers then also punished those who had troubled the guru.

The guru after fighting a brave war decided to vacate the fort of Anandpur Sahib on the order of Panj Pyare. In the course of all these battles, the Guru suffered heavy losses, but never had any grudge against the eldest son of the Mughal Emperor and agreed to help him in the course of the battle. He was known for his fine archery and when he shot two arrows from Moti Bagh, it hit the Divan of the prince. The famous Guru Granth Sahib Ji is placed where he actually shot the arrow. It is nothing else but respect to his fine archery skills.

After the passing away of Guru Gobind Singh at Nanded in October 1708, the Sikhs looked up to her for guidance. She appointed Bhai Mani Singh to manage the sacred shrines at Amritsar and also commissioned him to collect the writings of Guru Gobind Singh. She also issued under her own seal and authority hukamnamas to sangats. The hukamnamas since discovered and published bear dates between 12 October 1717 and 10 August 1730. Mata Sundari was disappointed in her adopted son, Ajit Singh. Emperor Bahadur Shah treated him as the successor of Guru Gobind Singh, called him to his court and gave him a robe of honour in September 1710. This went to his head and he started 1iving in style as a courtier. He grew arrogant and haughty even towards Mata Sundari who disowned him, and migrated to Mathura. Ajit Singh was later convicted for murder and was put to death on 18 January 1725. Mata Sundari returned to live in Delhi where she ,died in 1747. A memorial in her honour stands in the compound of Gurdwara Bala Sahib, New Delhi.

History of  Gurudwara Sisganj Sahib Delhi

Guru Tegh Bahadur was born in the holy city of Amritsar on April, 1621. He was the fifth and the youngest son of the sixth prophet, Guru Hargobind, and the only one to deservedly ascend the pontific throne nearly 20 years after his father's death as ninth Guru of Sikhs. He was a great lover of poetry and peace, music and meditations, charity and human freedom. He was on his missionary tour in Bengal and Assam when he heard that Aurangzeb had issued orders to persecute the Brahmins, the custodians of Hindus faith. The Emperor had in those days thrown hundreds of Brahmins into jails in the hope that if they embraced the religion of the prophet, the rest of the Hindus would follow suit. (Latif) Five hundred Brahmins under the leadership of Pundit Kirpa Ram of Kashmir met Guru Tegh Bahadur at Anandpur to seek his protection and help, as Shivaji and the Rajputs had expressed their helplessness in the matter. Moved by their woeful tales the Compassionate Guru said,"Go and tell Aurangzeb that if he succeeded in converting Guru Tegh Bahadur, all Brahmins and their Hindu followers would accept Islam, but if he failed to do so he must stop the persecution of Brahmins.
Aurangzeb reached Delhi sometime in the middle of 1675. (the year given by Massir-i-Alamgiri, like many of its other dates is incorrect). Guru Tegh Bahadur reached Agra and courted arrest. He was brought to Delhi. Aurangzeb failed to convince Guru Tegh Bahadur that idolators should be physically eliminate by superior political power. Guru Tegh Bahadur was himself preaching against idolatory and Brahmanism, but he refused to accept that forcible conversion in any form was legally morally, and spiritually justified. He considered forcible conversion inhuman, brutal and against the basic moral values which higher religions preach. Guru Tegh Bahadur refused to show miracles to save his life because displaying occult powers was considered unworthy of true saints and prophets of God
By Aurangzeb's orders first, Guru Tegh Bahadur's leading apostles and companions in prison were tortured to death. Bhai Dayal Das was thrown into a boiling cauldron, Bhai Mati Das was sawn alive, Bhai Sati Das was burnt on the stake. The sight of the heroic martyrdom of his disciples did not disturb Guru Tegh Bahadur's mind. He was beheaded in the presence of a large crowd under a tree, the trunk of which is still preserved in Sis Ganj shrine on Thursday 11th November, 1675 A.D. Around the place of martyrdom of the Guru grew a temple now known as Sis Ganj. The well where he took his bath while in prison is still preserved. Chandni Chowk where Bhai Mati Das and his other companions were tortured to death will some day be acquired and a suitable memorial built. At present it is in the centre of Chandni Chowk Square.

A great fair is organized here during Vaishakhi for three days where more than 30000 people visit the Gurudwara.Baba Banda Singh Bahadur alongwith his family members and 740 Sikh soldiers were brought in captivity from Garhi Gurdas Nangal to Delhi. Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and his four years old son, Ajay Singh alongwith 26 eminent Sikhs were martyred here.

History of  Gurudwara Sahib Shaheed Baba Banda Singh Bahadur

The Gurudwara Sahib Shaheed Baba Banda Singh Bahadur signifies the site of sacrifice of Baba Banda Singh. Baba Banda Singh is considered to be among the most prominent people in the Sikh history. Banda Singh Bahadur was initially called as Lakshman Das, after he turned into a sage he took up the name Madho Das. He left the worldly pleasures and stayed on the banks of the River Godavari about 15 miles away from Nanded which was once the camping area for the tenth Guru of Sikhism. Madho Das once met the Guru and became his disciple. He accepted Sikhism and was then known as Banda Singh.
Along with other Sikhs he was sent to Punjab to fight against people who were persecuting Sikhs. Baba Banda Singh arrived in Punjab in 1709 and started movements against those who harmed the Sikhs. In a matter of one year they succeeded in occupying the entire area of Punjab. But soon the Emperor arrived in the area and it became difficult for them to stay in power beyond 11 months. After this, Baba Banda Singh took shelter in the hills and continued to fight against the Mughals for the next 5 years.
However soon his army was defeated and cornered in Gurdas Nangal. They were forced to surrender on the condition that no wrong would be done to them. Baba Banda Singh was arrested in 1715 on 15th December and was taken to Delhi with other prisoners. In the following year many of the prisoners were executed. Banda Singh Bahadur was paraded in a procession near Qutub Minar. He was forced to convert to Islam but after denying repeatedly Emperor Farukh Siyar tortured Banda Singh Bahadur brutally to death. Banda Singh Bahadur’s young son was beheaded and his heart was taken out and forced into Banda Singh Bahadur’s mouth. His eyes were extorted out and his body was hung on a gate and his skin was forcefully removed from his body as a part of the torture. Later his limbs were excised one by one.
The Gurudwara Sahib Shaheed Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was built on the very site of the martyrdom of Banda Singh Bahadur. The Gurudwara is fairly small and there are considerations on its expansions. The first floor of the Gurudwara is raised on pillars. The lower floor is planned to be converted into a hall for organizing langars (community meals). Most of the structure of the Gurudwara is built out of marble. The structure is stopped with a small dome that sits on a square. Around the Gurudwara is a parikrama that connects it to the gate where the initial prakash was done.
The Gurudwara is managed by the Delhi Sikh Management Committee. There is also a school that has been established in the name of Banda Singh Bahadur. There is a pillar rising to a height of 50 meters that stands overlooking the Khwaja Bakhtair Kaki Dargah which now has the Gurudwara. The pillar has a steel hook which is believed to be the hook from which Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was lynched. On the neighboring site is another Gurudwara.
